Kent Kingdon. Grants: Exeter silver pennies

Kent Kingdon's Bequest for the Royal Albert Museum and Free Library

Purchase grants

Exeter silver pennies 991-1086

In April 2001 the Kent Kingdon Trust assisted the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in the purchase at auction in New York of ten rare silver pennies minted at Exeter between about 991 and 1086. Most of these had formerly been part of the R.P.V.Brettell collection, one of the finest collections of Devon coins ever assembled, which was sold at auction in 1970. The Royal Albert Memorial Museum holds one of the two British reference collections of the Saxon and Norman coinage of the Devon mints, the other being the British Museum, so it was fortunate that the Museum was able to take this opportunity to fill significant gaps in its collection. The coins are reproduced with kind permission of the Museum.
